The Titanic

The RMS Titanic

One hundred years ago today, April 10, 1912, the pride of the White Star Line, The Titanic, set sail from Southampton, England to New York City. Along that voyage, the 'unsinkable' ship hit an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean.  This led to the great ship sinking off the coast of Halifax, Nova Scotia on April 15, 1912.

  1. The Titanic is a sad story of millions people dieing. But before that the Titanic had to be built. It took $7,500,000 to build the titanic. Also, 2 people died while building the titanic. Did you know that there was atleast 2,223 people on board including the workers. With all these people you needed food and water. 14,000 gallons of drinking water was used every 24 hours! WOW! Also, there was 40,000 fresh eggs in the ships provisions, and there was 1,000 bottles of wine taken aboard. Then when the tradgedy happened the boat hit the iceberg. 1,517 people out of the 2,223 died. On April 15th we remember the sadness of the titanic.

  2. Some facts that I found interesting about the Titanic were that originally, a lifeboat drill was scheduled to take place on board the Titanic on April 14, 1912 - the day the Titanic hit the iceberg. However, for an unknown reason, Captain Smith canceled the drill. Many believe that had the drill taken place, more lives could have been saved and not only were there not enough lifeboats to save everyone on board, most of the lifeboats that were launched off the Titanic were not filled to capacity. For instance, the first lifeboat to launch, Lifeboat 7 from the starboard side) only carried 24 people, despite having a capacity of 65 (two additional people later transferred to Lifeboat 7 from Lifeboat 5). However, it was Lifeboat 1 that carried the fewest people - only seven crew and five passengers (a total of 12 people) despite having a capacity for 40. Which makes me wonder if maybe the crash was planned?

  3. The titanic story is very sad millions of lives wee lost. And it was a big waste of money it cost to build the titanic $7.500.000. There were only 64 life boats I would of packed it with a lot of more I know they thought it was indetructable but they have to think worst case scenario. It took 74 years to find were the titanic sank. The depth it sank at 12600 and the temputure of the water is -2.

  4. One intresting fact was that none of the sailors had any emergeny training or life boat training. Therefore if they had training they wouldve been more prepared also helping or saving more lives to make t his tragedy a little less tragic.

  7. 2,223 people put their lives in danger when they boarded the Titanic. They didn't know that out of the 2,223 of them only 705 would survive. If they captain had listened to the six ice berg warnings, he had received maybe 1,503 people wouldn't have died. When it sank the Titanic split in two, and the two pieces were 12,600 feet away from each other.

  8. The titanic was a very sad thing that happend in the world. Alot of lives were lost on april the 15. Only 65 people could fit in one of the 20 life boats. It had 885 crew members on the boat and 1317 passengers on board. Also 107 children. That some things on the titanic.

  9. The Titanic was a very sad time that is known all over the world as the "unsinkable" ship crashing off the coast of Newfoundland on April 15th 1912 . Which leads me to my next point .. When Jasmine said "Which makes me wonder if maybe the crash was planned?" no jasmine the crash was not planned. Why would they crash a ship with thousands of people on it killing half of them it, just would not make sense. I mean creating a tragdey to really see if the Titanic was really "unsinkable" wouls not make sence seeing as The ship was considered to have been so well constructed it was believed she could sustain any amount of damage and still remain afloat. Late on the night of April 14, 1912, the sinking of the Titanic proved this idea wrong in a horribly tragic way not onlt that but The causes of Titanic to sink have been the subject of much study and debate. Obviously, the instigating factor was the collision with the iceberg; however the question of 'how did it sink' is frequently the center of most questions regarding the Titanic. So in conclusion Surprisingly, many of the passengers remained unaware of this fact. Some passengers reported hearing and feeling a strange quivering in the ship; however, they did not attribute this to any potential problem and went on about their business.
Others had seen the iceberg has it passed their window and hurriedly donned dressing gowns and robes, anxious to discover whether or not they had truly hit the berg. At first, passengers were assured that there would only be a slight delay and were given no indication of the true severity of the situation.
Passengers located at strategic points in the ship already knew the devastating truth however: the Titanic was sinking and sinking fast. An SOS was sent out to neighboring ships. The Carpathia picked up the ship's distress call and radioed back to let the ship's crew know they were on their way. It would be too late, however. By the time the Carpathia arrived, all that remained of the Titanic was a handful of lifeboats filled with shocked survivors.

  11. The British RMS Titanic caused 1,514 deaths after crashing into an iceberg. The ship was claimed unsinkable, but it was. The passengers included some of the most wealthiest people in the world, and over a thousand others. Most of these people were seeking new life in North America. This ship was the largest ship afloat at the time of her voyage. She was 882 long, and 92 feet wide. It was built between 1909, and 1911. The ship had an on board gymnasium, swimming pool, high class restaurants, and opulent cabins. The Titanic also had powerful wireless telegraph provided for the customers and operational use. She had high class safety features meant to help in the case of sinking. The sinking of the titanic scared people world wide. It will never be forgotten.

  12. In 1898 (100 years ago) the Titanic had sank and Morgan Robertson wrote a novel called Futility befor the sinking. This fictitious novel was about the largest ship ever built hitting an iceberg in the Atlantic ocean on a cold April night. The fictional ship (named Titan) and the real ship Titanic were similar in design and their circumstances were remarkably alike. Both ships were labeled "unsinkable".
and did you know that there was two dogs that were among the Titanic survivors.

  13. The Titanic happened 100 years ago, many people died when the Titanic sunk> more lives could have been saved in the crew members reacted quicker.

  14. This is a very sad story. The Titanic hit the iceberg at 11:40pm on the night of April 14, 1912 and sunk just over two hours later. Originally a lifeboat drill was scheduled the day before the Titanic hit the iceberg. But Captain Smith canceled the drill. Many people believe that if the drill had taken place, more people would have been saved. From the time the lookouts sounded the alert, the officers on the bridge had only 37 seconds to react the Titanic before it hit the iceberg. In that time, First Officer Murdoch ordered the Titanic to turn left. He also ordered the engine room to put the engines in reverse. The Titanic did but it wasn’t quite enough. On April 15th we will remember the sad story of the Titanic on its One-Hundredth anniversaries this year.

  15. At 11:40pm the night of April 14 1912 a route to New York ended in disaster, the RMS Titanic struck an iceberg that would ultimately lead to sinking 3 hours later. At around 2:20am on the morning of April 15 the, Titanic disappeared beneath the surface of the Atlantic Ocean. At 11:40 while sailing 400 miles south of Newfoundland lookouts spotted a large iceberg directly ahead of the ship. The captain speed was so fast that if he went slower he could have past they Iceberg and saved thousands of life’s. Between 2 hours and 40 minutes passengers were hanging on and falling off as the boat spilt into two and slowly sunk to the bottom. There were about 2,500 aboard the titanic traveling the north Atlantic more than 1,500 lives were lost on the day of the sinking. As the boat was splitting into too many passengers fell in the freezing water with the temperature of -2. This could cause death in the time period of 15 minutes. In those 15 minutes you would get hypothermia and freeze to death. The question of who’s fault for the sinking of the Titanic has been under speculation for over a century. Many people could be to blame but one stands out from the rest, Captain Edward john smith. Some sources state that he could be blamed but Smith had never been able to defend himself in any form of debate. The question of whose fault for sinking the ship may be under speculation for more than a century on this day. It’s been 100 years since the titanic sunk I hope 100 years will go by and people will be still talking about this tragedy.

  16. Wow! I can’t believe that it has been one-hundred years since the Titanic went down. I find it so sad that there was around two thousand-two hundred and three people aboard the titanic and only around seven hundred and five people survived. The titanic the iceberg at 11:40 pm on April 14th 1912.. The titanic could have carried 64 life boats but only actually carried 20. The life boats could carry 64 people but in the first one only 20 people were actually on it. Believe it or not it only took 2 hours and forty minutes for the titanic to sink after it hit the iceberg. These are just some interesting fact I have found. I find it is just so sad that so many people died. Imagine all the families who got bad news that week. Even though this happened one hundred years ago, the Titanic will always be an important part in history.

  17. Unsinkable, that is what the Titanic was dubbed back in 1911 when construction was finished. Due to this name many of the safety precautions that were usually on boats were ignored with this one. It is this that personally gets to me with this story. Like the fact that sixty four life boats could have been on the titanic but only sixteen were actually put on because all sixty four made it look bad. Also on April 14 the titanic got five ice warnings but failed to slow down. Small and ridiculous mistakes likes this caused the death of 1517 people. The old saying "Better safe than sorry" could have saved all those lives.

  18. at 11:40pm on april 14 1912 thats when disaster struck the RMS titanic. the titanic had struck a iceburg causing the ship to go down and completely breaking into two. there were about 2,500 people aboard the ship but only 1000 people had managed to escape. WOW! just thinking about this is just tearafing. its has been over 100 years since this devastation has happend. all of those lives that were lost will always be remembered and the RMS titanic will and always be a huge part of history.

  19. 100 years ago, when the $7,500,000 Titanic struck a huge iceberg late on the night ofApril 14, it took three hours for the whole thing to go down. It had finally sunk early in the morning of April 15, 1912. 2223 of the maximum 3547 people were onboard the brand new ship, and some of the paint was still even wet. 1517 people died, but only 306 bodies were discovered. The boat could of held 64 lifeboats, but it was only equipped with 20. More people could of been saved if the ship went through with the lifeboat drill that was planned to run shortly before the sinking, and if all the lifeboats held as many people as they were capable of. For example, one lifeboat held 28 people onboard and could of held 65. The sinking of the Titanic was a tragic time in history, and will be remembered for years to come.

  20. The sinking of the Titanic is a tragic mishap that occurred one hundred years ago on April 14th-15th. They actually only put enough lifeboats to save about half of the people on the boat because it was virtually "un-sinkable". There were 3547 passengers, but their 20 lifeboats could only hold 1178 people. 1517 people died in the accident. One parlor suite ticket was $4,350. The boat sailed 4 days before it sank. The majority of people died from hypothermia in the first 15 minutes of being in the water. The night of the 14th had gotten five iceberg warnings, but did not slow down. Did you know what made the Titanic "unsinkable" was the apparent reason to why it sank? The manufacturers that made the titanic wanted to try out a new theory to make the problem of sinking boats disappear. At the bottom of the boat, there were many little compartments in which were activated (closed) when water filled up. While the captain tried to avoid the iceberg, it actually made the problem worse. The iceberg cut the boat along the side, and the compartments could not close with so much water flooding in at one time. All the water weighed down the boat and left the heavy boat tip upwards. All the weight of the boat made the great boat snap in half, which lead to many deaths. If the boat had hit the iceberg straight on, the tragedy would have never been so fatal.
