Nelson Mandela

I don't think that there is a better 21st Century example we can use in our class to discuss Human Dignity and Reconciliation than Nelson Mandela. We only need to look to his example of how he treated his captures to understand what respect for others and reconciliation means.

Use this period to research Nelson Mandela and respond with a paragraph on how you think he connects to our Focus on Faith theme, Human Dignity

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear”. –Nelson Mandela
These were the words spoken truly by Nelson Mandela. This man showed courage and appreciation of other by speaking up for equality for people’s race and culture. He spoke to people telling them these words: I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities”. What he means by this is that all people should have equal opportunities. Native American and White people had separate fountains, bathrooms, and schools. Nelson Mandela wanted to change all of that. He showed Human Dignity because when he was standing up for his rights he got thrown in prison for 27 years. All that time he still wanted to stand up for his rights. He never gave up and showed respect and appreciation to other people. He wanted all mankind to change and he made that happen. He is a very inspirational man and he will never be forgotten in our world.

“Education is the most powerful weapon, which you can change the world” – Nelson Mandela.
I think this quote relates to human dignity because it reminds me of equal rights. Nelson Mandela is saying in this quote that if we all had an equal education, we could change the world. Human rights relate to human dignity because they both have to do with respect. We all have the right to a proper education, and we need to have human dignity to give education to people who don’t have it. Human dignity is about respecting and caring for others. Nelson Mandela is telling us that in that quote. That if we have human dignity then we should help those who need it, and we can change the world.

  3. Poverty is not an accident like slavery and apartheid it is man made and can be removed by the actions of human beings-nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela shows human dignity because people threw him in a jail for fifteen years and he didn’t loose faith he gained it. He reminds me of a super hero because he saves his people from evil.

  4. The definition of human dignity is “An individual or group's sense of self-respect and self-worth, physical and psychological integrity and empowerment.” Well I think that Nelson Mandela showed how we can respect and show our human dignity in a powerful way. In South Africa, people with dark skin were not being treated with all the rights that they should have been treated with, in other words, their human dignity was not being respected. Nelson Mandela was a man in South Africa with dark coloured skin. He didn’t like the way he and other black people were being treated so he took a stand. Nelson Mandela fought for all human rights (black and white). Just like he said “I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination.” This means that he thinks that every human being should be treated with their human rights and respect. After many years of black discrimination Nelson Mandela made a change happen in his country and now everyone is treated with their human rights when he became the president of South Africa. Sadly Nelson Mandela died at age 95. Like Nelson Mandela said “when a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country he can rest in peace. I believe I have made that effort and that is, therefore why I will sleep for the eternity.” Well I also believe that he has made a difference in our world, and has shown a great example of human dignity.

  5. When Nelson Mandela was 45 he went to jail for standing up against white and black domination. He showed everyone to respect each other’s culture and race. Not only did he stand up for what he believed in he showed us by becoming the first black president of South Africa in 1994 4 years later after being released from jail being 72. Nelson Mandela has shown us human dignity by respecting not only his culture and race but everyone’s.

"No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than it's opposite."

Nelson died when he was 95 years old leaving the world with a big heart. He has taught us to fight against what we believe in.

Nelson Mandela is a great example of human dignity. Why? Nelson APPRECIATED peoples talents. He wanted EQUALITY of different races. He didn’t want white people to be the power, nor did he want black people to rule. That shows lot equality. He also understood that people are unique he didn’t care if they were black or white. Another reason was that Nelson respected others. How did Nelson become a sign of human dignity? Nelson went to jail in 1963 for revolutionizing against discrimination. Then people got angry the South Africans wanted Nelson to be free. But the Apartheid continued. Several years later. Other countries helped South Africa free Nelson. And he was free.

I believe that Nelson Mandela is a great representation of Human Dignity in our world for many reasons. In the time when certain races were considered better or greater than others, Nelson Mandela stood up for races that were being discriminated against, even when he got arrested for it. He believed that all races should be equal, and this is true. God created each person uniquely. We should not judge people based on their race or culture. This is what Nelson Mandela believed. He believed that white people should not be considered greater than black people, nor should black people be considered greater than white people. When human dignity was not being respected, Nelson Mandela fought for it. This is showing human dignity.

  10. nelson Mandela shows a lot of human dignity. when he was in jail he wrote "I was not born with a hunger to be free I was born free in every way you could know. free o run in the fields near my mothers heart free to swim in the clear stream that went through my village. free to roles under the stars ad ride the broad backs of slow moving blooms. it was only when I begin to learn that my boyhood freedom was an illusion when I discovered as a young man that my freedom was taken away from me and that I gain to hunger for it. I want to thank nelson because without him I wouldn't have some of my friends. RIP Nelson Mandela
