  1. Snowboarding has a long history. Snowboards were first made by plank of plywood and your feet were secure by clothesline and horse reins. Snowboarding is like surfing but your feet are strapped and you ride on snow. The equipment you need to play snowboarding are eyewear, gloves, thick socks, a backpack to carry your stuff in, a jacket, snow pants, a helmet, wrist guards, and knee and elbow pads.

  2. The Skeleton Emily.

The skeleton is a winter Olympics sport. There are many pieces of equipment that athletes must wear if they are doing the skeleton. The sled is one of the most important pieces of equipment. It is shaped like a skeleton, which is how the sport got its name. The sled also has two handles, which are used at the start, for the start push. The handles are covered in a soft material, so it is easy to grip. The frame of the sled is made of steel, and it weighs from 35kg to 43kg. The sled has no brakes. It does have bumpers at the front and rear of the sled, which protect the athlete from bumping into walls. The athletes also have to wear a lot of equipment, all of which will help them when they are racing. The racing suits they wear are very tight, which help the athletes go faster when racing. The racing suit will often have elbow pads as well. The helmets are something that everyone must wear when competing in the skeleton. They are made of hard plastic, and also have a protective chin guard and visor. Gloves also help the athlete safe. the are made of leather, and don't help the athlete go any faster, the are only there for protection. The last thing that is important for the athlete is the shoes. the shoes have spikes on the bottom of the soles, which make it easier for the competitors to run at the start. The skeleton is a very interesting sport, and I hope you learned something about the equipment from my paragraph.

  3. Two great sports so far. Thanks for posting so early! My personal favourite, the skeleton and one that I would like to try, SNOWBOARDING...

As you write your paragraphs, make sure that you include: a topic sentence, three points, each with supporting details, and a concluding sentence!

Just because you are commenting online, doesn't mean that you can forget to use proper grammar and sentence structure. Post your BEST work! You may also want to comment on other students' work to begin an online discussion.

  4. Bobsleigh

Personally, I love watching the Olympics, whether it's summer OR winter. One of the events I'm most excited for this year is bobsleigh. The bobsleigh event, (also known as bobsled) has been a part of the Winter Olympics ever since the first winter games were held in Charmonix, France in 1924. The sport requires a team of two of four people. A crew is made up of a pilot, a brakeman, and in a four-person event, two pushers. These roles are selected by an athletes speed and strength. Pilots must have the skill, timing, and finesse to steer the sleigh along the path where it will go fastest. The steering system consists of two metal rings that control a pulley system that the front runner (or pilot) will control. To turn left, the pilot would pull the left ring. To turn right, he or she would pull the right ring. The pilot can't make very large turns though, since going faster than eighty miles per hour would result in a crash. As I said before, the pilot does most of the steering. By pulling the sled's brake lever, the brakeman stops the sled after crossing the finish line. I'm really looking forward to watching the Winter Olympics in Sochi this year!

  5. Snowboarding

A sport I found interesting is snowboarding. Snowboarding first started in the 1965 when Sherman Poppen tied 2 skis together as a gift to his daughter. The snurfer is what they called it. A combination of the word snow and surfer. The snurfer grew in popularity. The snurfer was then renamed a snowboard. And in 1998 it was added in the Winter Olympics. Snowboarding is a dangerous sport. That is why riders bring these special equipment. You need goggles to protect your eyes from snow. Gloves, thick socks, jacket and snow pants to keep you warm. A backpack to store shovel and a probe. Usually snowboarders have a beacon strapped into their body in case they get off trail. Helmet, wrist guards and knee and elbow pads to keep them safe. I am looking forward to this event. GO CANADA GO.

  7. Freestyle Skiing Sochi Winter Olympics 2014 By: Camryn

Are you interested in jumps, flips, and tricks? Then you will definitely love watching freestyle skiing in the Olympics this year. Freestyle skiing is a series of jumps and aerials.

Freestyle skiing was introduced to the winter Olympics in 1992 in Albertville, France. In the 1988 winter olympics, freestyle skiing was a demonstration sport. A demonstration sport means that is was a sport shown to get people into it. If enough people are interested in it, it eventually would become an Olympic sport. You first start out on top of a large hill with a ramp at the end. Then push yourself down the hill and go off the ramp and soar in the sky! Now you have to do flips and tricks up in the air. It is nerve-racking to watch but it is amazing at the same time. Once you reach the other side of the ramp you must land on your feet. Finally you slide down the hill! One of the best freestyle skiers so far is from the Republic of Belarus winning the most gold medals in the 2010 winter Olympics was Alexei Grishin.

Freestyle skiing has been one of my personal favourite sports. It has always amazed me to see people soaring in the air whilst doing series of flips. I wish I could do it but I can't even touch my own toes. It would take hard work and a lot of practice to be as good as the people to go into the Olympics and I am glad thats what they love to do.

  8. Skeleton is a very interesting sport to me. I think it is because it is a very challenging sport. You have to work every muscle in your body. Also, you have to be able to run fast with running shoes without slipping on the ice. You have to be able to steer (or not run into a corner) while maintaining your technique and shape.

My favorite skeleton athlete (from Vancouver 2010) is J. Montgomery from Canada. I like him because he is extremely fast. I also like him because he has amazing technique.

I am so excited for the Olympics this year. Go Canada Go.

  9. Freestyle Skiing

There are several winter sports out there but, this one really stands out for me. A sport that i found interesting is freestyle skiing. Freestyle Skiing is one of the sports that they play in the Olympics. The Skiers must wear the proper equipment before skiing, here are some of the equipments that they need. The skis, The skis can be in any length weather it is long or short, for men the average length is 185cm and for women it would be 175 cm. Skiers must also have ski poles they use it for turning and maintaining their balance. There are also the boots, the boots helps the skiers when they are landing, it can also withstand the force of landing. The helmet, the helmet is made of hard plastic, it is made that way because it protects your head from getting head injuries and there is the ski wear, they also have to wear knee pads, The colours of thee knee pads are often different from the ski suit that they are wearing. The history of freestyle skiing, at the beggining of the 20th century in Norway, Italy, Austria .and the early 1920's, U.s skiers started to flip and spin. Freestyle skiing was known as "hotdogging". Freestyle skiing was demonstrated at the 1988 Calgary game. Demonstrated means that they are showing it to other people. It is amazing how the athletes can soar in the air and do some crazy flips and turns and they still land in their feet. it would take a lot of practice to be good as the athletes that are going to the Olympics. I HOPE THE ATHLETES WOULD HAVE A GOOD OLYMPICS.!

I Am Excited For This Years Olympics..!

  10. When I’m watching the winter olympics the sport i find most entertaining and interesting is snowboarding. Snowboarding has been around since the 1920s, A man named Sherman Poppen created the snowboard, he started off by tying two skis together with a rope.
Snowboards were originally made out of ply wood or wooden planks. They are now made by wood or Foam Core, Topsheet with Printed Graphic, Fiberglass, Steel Inserts, Plastic base, Metal Edges, Resin System (glue) and Rubber Foil.
You are supposed to wear helmets, goggles, gloves, snowboard socks, jacket, and snow pants while you are snowboarding.

  12. Snowboarding

Snowboarding is one of many winter Olympic sports but it is one of my favourites. In snowboarding there are three main competitions the half pipe, snowboard cross and the giant parallel slalom, in the half pipe competition you have to use a half pipe to do as many tricks as you can so you can get a better score from the judge. In snowboard cross its a race to the bottom of a hill and qualify through all the heats then do the finishing race. and in the giant parallel slalom you have to go to the bottom and get through the flags. Also one of the best snowboarders is Shuan White he has one many gold medals in the half pipe competition and there is many other amazing snowboarders who are going to win gold medals this year!

  13. this sport is bobsledding. why did I chose this sport because I like the sport by the action at the sport. wye, the speed, the crashes, and more.
the gear needed is a helmet a jump suit and a bob sled.
how it works, 2 persons push a sled with 2 persons and to steer they have to lean to the right to go to the right and lean to the left to go left

    Curling
    Things you will need:
Some things you will need for curling is a curling broom and curling shoes. The broom is for sweeping and the shoes are for sliding.
    How to play:
The game consist of 6 to 12 ends (an end is one game within the game) Each team has 4 teamates and each player throws two stones. There are 4 positions Lead( which throws the first two stones), Second(wich throws the second pair of stones), vice(which throws the third pair of stones then helps choose a shot for the skip), and skip(which throws the last pair of stones and chooses all the shots for each player). The objective is to get as many points as possible in a game.
I think it is a very fun sport because you slide on ice and get two throw things and try and get them to a certain area. another fun thing about curling is the sweeping because you have to try and get the stone into the house which is a circular area. I think curling is a very fun sport and I think you should give it a try.

  15. Hockey is my favourite sport in the whole world. The equipment needed is shin pads, hockey pants, chest pads, elbow pads, a helmet, skates, neck guard, a stick and if you want to be on a team than you need to get a jersey and socks. Hockey is played with two teams with about 16 players on each team competing against each other. The goal is to get the puck through the opposing teams players, goalie and into the net with your stick and that’s called a goal. The team that has the most goals when the timer runs out wins the game. My favourite NHL (National Hockey Leauge) is Sidney Crosby because he is an amazing hockey player and best of all Canadian.

  18. There are many cool sports in the 2014 winter olympics, but one of the most famous ( and my favourite )is the Canadian womens hockey team. This sport / team has many great players, cool equipment, and a great history in the Olympics. The 21 players on the 2014 olympic team are made up of 3 goalies, 6 defenseman, and 12 forwards. About 76% of the players on this team have a left shot, while only about 24% of the players have a right shot. One of the main leaders on this team is Haley Wickenheiser, who is the teams captain. Haley has previously represented team canada in the past 4 winter olympics winning 3 golds and 1 silver. I am happy these women are representing team canada and i'm sure they'll do great. The equipment for the sport of womens hockey is very similar to the mens hockey equipment. In order of application the equipment includes a jill( jock in girl term), shin pads, socks, pants, skates, shoulder pads, elbow pads, jersey, neckgard, mouthgaurd, helmet, gloves, and lastly a stick ( or sticks if you want a backup ). This equipment can come in handy especially in womens hockey. Womens hockey has a great history in the winter olympics starting in 1998 when the Canadian olympic womens team won their first medal which was a silver , giving USA the gold. After Canadas loss to the USA the next 3 olympics were different. Canada won gold in the 2002, 2006, and 2010 winter olympics leaving the USA team with either a silver or bronze medal.

  20. Figure Skating
Figure Skating is a sport you can do by yourself,a duet, or a group performance. The non-Olympic discipline's are synchronize skating and four skating. Senior-level competition is when skaters perform two programs (short/long), depending on the discipline which include spins, jumps,,moves in the fields, lifts, throw jumps, death spirals, and other elements or moves. The blade has a groove on the bottom creating two district edges. The skater should be skating on one edge instead of both edges at the same time, which is referred as the flat edge. Figure skaters also have to complete various of levels, to beginners to seniors (the olympics level). Figure Skaters was invented in the prehistoric times when archaeological evidence of the activity has been found,And figure skating is one of the branches of ice skating.
