I am aware of many occasions' origins that we recognize throughout the year. However, there are still some that I do not understand why they exist. One, for example is today, Pancake Tuesday, Fat Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras... It seems like just a regular Tuesday.

What is the significance behind this day? Where did it come from? Why do we eat pancakes today? Post what you can find out in a well written, organized paragraph!

  1. Shrove Tuesday is called "Shrove Tuesday" because 'shrove' means being forgiven for sins. It happens each year on a different date depending on when Easter is. Pancake Day is another name for Shrove Tuesday. A long time ago it was a day for eating and having a good time. People would go to church and confess all their sins and be forgiven before the beginning of Lent. Since nice foods and eggs were banned during Lent, one way of using them would be to make pancakes.

  3. Pancakes are eaten on shrove tuesday because they represent fasting for lent. they're made of the things that used to be restricred during ritual fasting during lent. This makes them the perfect food to chow down on right before fasting begins.

  4. I ask the same question every year (the reason why is because im very forgetfull). I asked my mom this morning and she told me that the reason why it's called "fat tuesday" is because it's the day befor lent. Lent is a a period were people (not all but most) give yp somthing like candy, ice creem, takeout and/or another thing. So the reason why it's called "fat tuesday" is in preperation so people (not all but most) can remove some of the fat in their house befor lent.

Many people overeat on Mardi Gras, the day before Ash Wednesday because it is the day before they fast. In New Orleans there is a big parade and balls with many colourful beads, floats and balloons to celebrate Mardi Gras. Cakes called king cakes are eaten on Mardi Gras. King cakes are only eaten on special occasions like a birthday. The woman would make the cake and it can some times serve up to 500 people.

  17. Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent starts: the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. It's a day of penitence, to clean the soul, and a day of celebration as the last chance to feast before Lent begins.
Shrove Tuesday is sometimes called Pancake Day after the fried batter recipe traditionally eaten on this day. But there's more to Shrove Tuesday than pigging out on pancakes or taking part in a public pancake race. The pancakes themselves are part of an ancient custom with deeply religious roots. Penitence: Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the ritual of shriving that Christians used to undergo in the past. In shriving, a person confesses their sins and receives absolution for them.
When a person receives absolution for their sins, they are forgiven for them and released from the guilt and pain that they have caused them.

  18. Shrove Tuesday is pancake Tuesday simply because we eat pancakes on this day.
There is more to just eating pancakes on shrove Tuesday this is the last day before the period which Christians call Lent. Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the food that aren’t allowed in Lent. Pancakes were eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs which were forbidden during Lent. The name shrove Tuesday comes from the old word “shrive” which means to confess. On shrove Tuesday people used to confess their sins so that they were forgiving before the season of Lent .

  20. The significance of Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday, is to indulge in food that were not allowed during Lent. People eat pancakes because they contain fat (giving it the name Fat Tuesday), butter and eggs, which are foods that were banished during Lent traditionally. It is called Shrove Tuesday because the word shrove comes from the old word shrive, which means to confess. People would confess their sins the on this day so they could be free on their sins before Lent begins. It is celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday, which starts the Church season of Lent that leads up to Easter Sunday.

  22. Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Tuesday, Fat Tuesday, and Marti Gras. What do these name all have in common and why is it so important? All of these names are similar because they are all the same day. They all mean the same thing. No, it is not a day to sit around and eat pancakes all day. It is a day to clean your soul if sin and to celebrate before you start to fast. When you make pancakes you usually use a lot of the fatty foods. People confess their sins today (Shrove Tuesday) so they are free of sin when Lent starts. Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent starts. Shrove Tuesday has been a tradition for thousands of year.

  23. Shrove Tuesday was originally a day of sorrow for past sins. The word “Shrove,” was derived from the word “Shrive,” which means to confess. Though today we know it as a day to feast on all those foods that you cant have during Lent. A long time ago people would fast and used Shrove Tuesday as a day to eat up all the food in their house that they couldn’t eat during Lent. That way it wouldn’t go to waste. For Shrove Tuesday my family and I have pancakes and sausages for dinner. My mom says she likes it because she always knows what to cook.
